One word. Charlie Sheen. WWE have announced that in some capacity Sheen will play a part at SummerSlam. Yes, my good people, WWE are that desperate to sell one of the big four pay per view events yet again, that they've resorted to hiring celebrities to do the work for them. I thought and prayed that Charlie Sheen's appearance at Raw's thousandth episode was a one off that would fall into the same category as almost every appearance by a Celebrity Raw GM. Yet here we are, a fortnight after Raw blew out the candles and Sheen is still here.
There's quite obviously no place for Charlie Sheen in WWE. All the guy is doing is using up time that WWE need for highlighting other talent. What do you think the result would be if WWE ran Sheen through the WWE Wellness Policy before they allowed him T.V time? A pound to a penny to a pinch of shit, that WWE would turn a blind eye and allow Sheen to try and scrape back whatever career he has left.
Charlie Sheen isn't the only one who threatens to hog not just the spotlight at SummerSlam, but leading up to the big event. Once again, to sell pay per view numbers, WWE have wheeled out Shawn Michaels to stand in Triple H's corner. How do I know that WWE are going to dedicate T.V time to this angle? Because they had Lesnar go out on Raw and say that he'll see HBK before SummerSlam. Dolph Ziggler might have hoped that time would have been dedicated to his run for the World Heavyweight Championship. Even if that notion would have been disillusioned.
They're doing it again. Just when you thought that WWE had learnt it's lesson about providing for the future, they hit a spiral that is only heading one way. Getting celebrities to paper over the crack of not enough cared for superstars is not going to end well in any sense of the imagination. Do WWE really believe that Charlie Sheen has the power to pull viewing figures needed to warrant his price tag? And do they think Shawn Michaels has the selling power so soon after his impassioned Wrestlemania appearance? If Vince had have done this kind of thing in the nineteen nineties, then it's fair to say that WWE wouldn't have been around today.
WWE need to, as we say in England, shit or get off the pot. Create new stars or contemplate closing your doors. Because the disillusioned will watch and ignore the cracks appearing right now, doesn't mean they will forever. The kids who watch now, who buy tickets to live events, who don't have the knowledge to know that anything is wrong will grow up, and they'll grow up noticing the same things as we do now. WWE should be showing them different sides to this business with different wrestlers so they'll grow up and bring their kids along.
There's only so many times you can foll someone before they see the truth.
Onwards and Upwards...
