THE DECLINE OF AWESOMENESS

They suckered me in just like they did all of you. I was convinced that the ingle most talented wrestler to step through the door in the last five years was finally getting the break he deserved. Yet again, WWE have seen fit to sacrifice the Miz so their product doesn’t become stale.

I’m all in favour of making new stars and all that, but come on, the Miz? The guy had so much more to give as Intercontinental Champion. Switching the Intercontinental Championship to Kofi Kingston on the Main Event was the biggest mistake WWE have made yet. After his return at Money in the Bank, Miz looked on top of the world. Capturing the Intercontinental Championship and starring in WWE’s latest money drainer should have meant that Miz would be safeguarded against this kind of stop start push. If WWE were ever serious about selling ‘The Marine 3’ then Miz would be on top of the world right now. Even WWE must know that no one is going to buy into a film in which the main star has little pulling power in the company that hires him.

As it is, the slow decline that Miz escaped by taking a break from WWE seems to have continued. If WWE has switched the gold to keep the product fresh and stop it stagnating then how do they explain John Cena for the past seven years? There were other areas WWE could have shaken up to keep it fresh. They should have left the Miz alone.

Now WWE are going to have the Miz chasing the Intercontinental Championship for ever more. Miz is not as effective as a challenger as he is as Champion, that’s a known fact. Miz is at is best when he’s got what others want and bragging about it. By switching the gold on such an unimportant show, WWE sent out two message to the WWE Universe. 1) The Intercontinental Championship isn’t important enough to be defended on Raw or Smackdown and 2) That WWE doesn’t have the faith in the Miz to once again carry the company forward so we can’t have either.

The only bright side to come out of this is that Kofi Kingston isn’t going to be anchored in the tag team division anymore. At last WWE have pushed Kingston back into singles action but judging by Miz’s treatment, then for how long? I’ve lost count of how many singles superstars looked like they were about to break through the barrier and then just disappeared out of sight never to be seen again. It’s madness that WWE should take the supposed biggest mid card Championship from a man that could do so much with it and give it to a man who, whilst infinitely talented, has lost matches to dumbest of moves and been involved in some of the worst endings to matches in history. Kofi Kingston is a future main eventer no doubt and a few more years and he’ll make a great WWE Champion. But the Miz was on the right track and now it must feel like a huge kick in the happy sacks.

The best solution to this feud would be to give Miz the gold back as soon as possible. There has to be a rematch so Hell in a Cell or Survivor Series would be the perfect place to do it. Somewhere Miz can take centre stage in front of a large enough audience that it convinces those watching that Miz has what it takes. WWE can’t just one day decide to give Miz the WWE Championship and expect us to buy into it. Because we know that he’s now threatened by mid card players. There’s no way Miz can come back from this quickly unless WWE reverse their decision.

It boggles the mind that WWE would even think of burying someone like Miz. In case you don’t know this, Miz does as much for WWE that Cena does, behind the scenes. He gives up his days to attend charity events. He represents WWE at any function of gala they need representation at and he always looks immaculate. Unlike Cena who looks like he’s just come from the basketball court. Is that what WE are trying to tell future main eventers? That you can tow the company line, give up days off that you need to recover from injuries and rest up and your reward will be a big fat burial which in turn will all but destroy your career?

Maybe we should have seen this coming. WWE have Miz go out week in and week out telling us how awesome he is, which he is. Yet on WWE.Com, when Miz captured the Intercontinental Champion they had a big article asking ‘Is the Miz still awesome?’ detailing if Miz still had what it took to be awesome in WWE. That’s not going to get people interested in him. What they should have done and still be doing is running articles about how Miz is one of the best and how he’s going to be a future WWE star.

For Miz, the warning bells should be sounding again. This is how his 2011 – 2012 burial began. If it goes on much longer then Miz would probably be better seeking employment elsewhere. He has the talent and the look to be WWE’s future flag bearer. This is not the treatment WWE should be bestowing on someone like the Miz. Save it for the NXT jobbers.

There’s a motto Vince should start living by. It goes ‘Be nice to people on your way up. Because you may meet them again on your way down!’

Onwards and upwards...
