Step into the Ring

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETLEY DIFFERENT

It hadn’t dawned on me that it had been a while since we’d had a catch up, just you and me and without anything to write up a comprehensive review on (I have yet to receive the ‘Batista – The Animal Unleashed’ release) I thought this would be a great opportunity to have a quick chat with you all and catch up on some wrestling we haven’t covered lately. So sit back and grab yourself a drink.

Our first port of call is the departure from WWE of Brie Bella, Daniel Bryan’s new wife and our congratulations go to both of them for recently tying the knot. I’m sure I’m not the only one who believes Daniel Bryan, as good a wrestler as he is, is punching way above his weight by putting a ring on Brie’s finger. Whilst she may be an awful wrestler, she’s hotter than the sun and anyone would be stupid not to partake in some out of the ring activity with her or sister Nikki. So well done Daniel, you’re the Champion in more than one way.

Whilst their nuptials are something to be celebrated, a departure is usually something one would ponder over but I can’t help but think this is for the very best. Brie was out of her depth from the very moments she stepped into the company and anyone with eyes could have told you The Bella Twins were in WWE just to use it as another stepping stone to something better. Whether it be modelling or a movie career, Brie and Nikki were on a path of their own and one which didn’t include stepping in the ring for longer than they were comfortable with.  Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t me going on a rant against two paltry wrestlers because the pair did provide some much needed material for a lot of men’s ‘alone time’ and they had their fair share of memorable moments to be proud of, the biggest being the best two things about the Divas Invitational match at WrestleMania XXX.

They were never cut out for wrestling and whilst Nikki will continue until John Cena puts a ring on her finger, this was always going to be for the best even though its clear Brie will return at some point. When she does, it should be as a heel. What better way to keep her relevant in the company than have her cost her husband the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, they could even do so in a tag team match against soon to be husband and wife C.M Punk and A.J Lee which we’ll get into more later. Some time away from the ring will be good for Brie. She can get used to married life, being a housewife if that is what she so wants to be before returning as a better wrestler taught by Daniel Bryan how to do at least the basics without looking a complete idiot.

Some people have offered up the opinion that Brie’s departure is because she’s pregnant and carrying what WWE will sure to name ‘The Goat Child’ in future promos should this be true. I can neither confirm or deny this speculation but if she is carrying then I’m sure we’d all be happy to see her as a full time mother rather than full time wrestler. She’s not going to be missed if we’re being completely honest and whilst her absence opens up a gap in the market for another, better equipped female to step forth, I will admit her exit was fitting even if the angle wasn’t all that. Slapping Stephanie McMahon around the face whilst sticking up for her husband and quitting her job to save his title reign put her on the fans good side for the final time, that’s not a bad way to go out.

Now, onto the next subject and one mentioned above. For those of you that didn’t know C.M Punk and April Mendez or as we know her A.J Lee are soon to be married and could be depending on when you read this. Whilst Punk is now the number one enemy of every single male in the world who would never have a chance with Lee in a million years, let’s be happy for them for once. After giving his life to the wrestling industry for years, Punk has found some happiness and that has to be admired. He’s not the most good looking guy around but he’s got what we haven’t and we shall be forever jealous.

I admire men like C.M Punk and Daniel Bryan. Getting women out of their league and actually being able to keep them. Maybe because I can’t. The last attractive woman to look at me, took one look at my Daniel Bryan ‘Yes’ T-Shirt and laughed shortly before walking away. Silly bitch didn’t know anything about wrestling and had I quizzed her she would have probably been of the opinion that John Cena was the best wrestler in history. Those sort of women are only good for one thing and I think we all know what that is gentlemen in the room. But I deviate.

Whilst there is no sign of Punk returning to the ring and he won’t before his contract expires in July, it’s good to know that someone, somewhere is happy with the person they love. Of course, A.J’s looks don’t hurt, she’s literally stunning and I would walk a million miles to be with her if at any time during her marriage she gets desperate. Though I have to question her commitment to the whole together forever thing, because she’ll be back in action before the end of July and ready to initiate what should be a thrilling feud with Paige at SummerSlam. Can you really have a happily ever after when one of you is on the road four days a week, especially so soon after tying the knot? We’ll have to wait and see. What I can tell you though is that when news reached Vince McMahon at Titan Towers, he couldn’t have been happier.

Not because Vince is invited to the wedding, he’s not. But because somewhere deep in his mind he knows that the strain of being apart will take its toll on both A.J and Punk and that can only mean one thing. To be close to his wife, C.M Punk will have no choice but to return to WWE whereupon he will be cheered and greeted like a hero and end Daniel Bryan’s WWE World Heavyweight Championship reign. This wedding could be the break Vince McMahon is looking for.

I recently purchased several T-Shirts from WWEShop.com in America. They’re great shirts and you’ll have seen them all on weekly television except the British Bulldog one which I urge any fan of Davey Boy to snap up seeing as it’s in the sale. The reason I brought them from American over the internet instead of WWE Euroshop in Britain or taking a trip to London to the wrestling shop is because they’re so bloody cheap. At WWE Euroshop, the authentic shirts are being sold for around twenty five British pounds, I got them for fourteen pounds ninety nine each and even though the postage is a little steep it’s still cheaper than buying them from just around the corner.

Now, the point of this little part isn’t to brag about what I’ve just brought but rather to offer up some alternatives for WWE when creating shirts to sell to the public. Something struck me when browsing the site and that is that WWE have made a selection of shirts baring the likeness of old wrestlers available and called then ‘Outside the Ring’ range and they include some great pay-per view shirts which you just have to have, but surely they would be inundated with orders if they were to recreate the old shirts from the mid-90’s.

This didn’t occur to me until I watched back some old In Your House events recently. The shirts in the 90’s were much better than those of today. Bigger, fuller designs and ones I would love to get my hands on again. The Shawn Michaels shirt, the Goldust shirt, even the Razor Ramon shirt. WWE would make a mint if they began to recreate the old t-shirts so what are they waiting for? They know there’s a demand for them so why wait? Get them out and get them sold. It’s good to have a little nostalgia in wrestling now and again; it’s something we don’t get a lot of.

I would like to end this with something non-related. As many of you will know, that live in Britain anyway, one of the greatest comic actors of our generation, Rik Mayall died on Monday at aged 56. Those of you in the USA may have heard of Rik but over here in the UK he was a comic institution and best remembered for his role as Richie in Bottom and Rik in The Young Ones and Captain Flashheart in Blackadder. Rik Mayall was a personal hero of mine because he refused to follow the heard when it would have been so easy. That refusal lead to some of the greatest comedy I have ever witnessed and some of the most unforgettable performances which will live on for eternity. I am deeply saddened to hear of his loss way too soon.

But as you good people who read this site regularly will know, it’s not the end we ever concentrate on when someone we loves passes, it’s the life. If you were a fan of Rik Mayall then please join me in thanking him for everything he did for comedy and British television, in whatever way you see fit. Be it laughing at his wonderful performances, raising a beer to him down the pub or just a round of applause for all his achievements. Rik Mayall left the world and his fans with so much joy and happiness to remember that he’ll never be forgotten. The laugher will remain and that’s something comforting to hold onto.

Rik Mayall will always have a special place in my heart and I wholeheartedly thank him for the comedic light he brought to my life. He’ll be sorely and sadly missed and richly reserves the applause and accolades he will be now be bestowed with.

Thank you Rik, the pleasure was all mine.
